The Loop
A downloadable game for Windows
The Loop
Made as a no-programming challenge using the Kenney 3D kit. It was an attempt to make a prototype-game without touching any code. This was made over a week with the godot Engine.
The Loop is a critique of level design and the illusion of player choice. Walk the same path, over and over, as small, subtle changes creep in. Choices lead you back to where you started. The prototype is as much about the systems behind it as it is about the player experience.
About the Design
- Lighting: No global illumination or directional lights. The entire level is lit using emissive textures and volumetric fog to create a sense of being lost in a generic, undefined world.
- Volumetric Fog: Used intentionally to hide the level, reinforce disorientation, and push a feeling of monotony.
- No Programming: All systems were built without coding, using proximity triggers, basic animations, and clever use of tools within the engine.
Key Features
- Repetitive levels with small, nearly imperceptible changes.
- A design that pokes fun at the illusion of choice in traditional games.
- Simplistic audio and visuals that emphasize the feeling of being trapped.
- A deliberately underwhelming "reward" that challenges expectations.
- Looping positional pitched-shifted music to layer over the main loop.
This project taught me to think creatively within strict constraints, focusing on atmosphere and player perception rather than technical complexity.
